Search Gainers:

Lindsay Lohan's latest publicity move mimicking Marilyn Monroe's 1962 final photo shoot, created quite an online buzz, catapulting Lohan to the top of this week's list, and bumping Poker (#25) from its usual perch atop the Lycos 50.  In New York Magazine's current Spring Fashion issue, Lindsay Lohan bares it all; well most of it, sending search activity for Lohan skyrocketing 700 percent.  Meanwhile, Poker sees the biggest drop, falling out of the top 10 for the first time in nearly two years.  Even in the midst of the European Poker Tour Copenhagen, web users appear less than captivated with poker this week.  American Timothy Vance took the chip lead into the final table and after a marathon heads-up battle, scored the $1,236,095 first prize money.

The Academy Awards® aired Sunday, Feb. 24 pushing "Juno" to its first-ever appearance on the Lycos 50, landing at number 10 this week. The quirky "Juno" missed the Oscar® for best picture but was a big winner online, rising 475 percent in search activity.  And baseball (#38) swings into action, re-entering this week's list, climbing 68 percent, due in part to the official start of spring training games this week, and on-going news surrounding the steroids scandal.   Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera see searches spike, up 70 percent and 60 percent respectively, hot on the heals of new baby news.  Lopez and husband Marc Anthony, recently celebrated the arrival of a baby boy and baby girl, whose names have yet to be revealed, while Aguilera continues to see a rise in search interest following the first photos of baby Max, which hit newsstands last week.

Grammy Drama:

Searches for the 2008 Grammy Awards continue to rise this week, up 200 percent, due in part to the on-going feud between Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé.  Franklin - known as the "Queen of Soul" - took offense after Beyoncé introduced Tina Turner as "the queen" during the duo's recent Grammy performance.  While the drama refuses to die down, Beyoncé appears to be the one getting

R-E-S-P-E-C-T with web users, gaining 100 percent in online interest.  In other Grammy-related search activity, singer Amy Winehouse is the biggest search gainer, with online interest tripling over the past two weeks since she captured her five Grammys.

Search Gainers:

As NCAA March Madness nears, sports junkies have begun making their predictions for which teams will make it to the Final Four®, causing a spike in searches for Final Four, up 113 percent. CBS has also sweetened the pot for NCAA March Madness viewers, announcing earlier this week for the first time ever, fans can watch all 63 games from the first round of tournament play through to the Final Four, and the championship game in San Antonio, TX, through its NCAA March Madness on Demand. In other CBS-related news, the premiere of "Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Faves," along with the "50th Annual Grammy Awards" helped CBS score big hits online and off, with a boost to the top of the Nielsen charts, and a strong showing for both shows on this week's Lycos Movers and Shakers list. Meanwhile, search activity heats up 117 percent for NASA this week, due in part to news reports that a U.S. spy satellite, roughly the size of a 7,000 pound school bus, will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere later this month or early March. On average, "one non-functioning spacecraft or other piece of debris has fallen back to Earth every day for more than 40 years," according to NASA's Orbital Debris Program Office. But because this latest object is a spy satellite, few details are known, causing a surge in search activity surrounding NASA.

American "Idle":

Clay Aiken (#3) sees his search interest nearly double this week, due in part to his Broadway debut playing the Eric Idle role in Monty Python's "Spamalot." Aiken recently assumed the role of Sir Robin, originally portrayed by David Hyde Pierce when the musical first debuted on Broadway in 2005.

John McCain see the biggest rises in search activity this week, gaining 147 percent and 114 percent respectively. Meanwhile, actress Lake Bell, best known for her recurring role on the TV series "Boston Legal," sees her search activity jump 150 percent this week. Bell stars opposite Eva Longoria in the supernatural romantic comedy "Over Her Dead Body," which opened Feb. 1.

Super Ads:

Car commercials top this year's list of most-searched Super Bowl ads, as Audi leads the pack with their amusing take on "The Godfather," followed by Toyota's "Live the Dream" Corolla ad. Dell's "Red" commercial ranks third, while Hyundai and Lexus round out the top five most popular Super Bowl commercials based on web search activity. Some of the funnier commercials appearing on this year's list include the Tide talking stain commercial, and the Coca-Cola spot featuring battling political pundits James Carville and Bill Frist bonding over their love of the soda. The only movie advertisement to make the top 10 is the commercial for "Iron Man." The movie opens in May and stars Robert Downey as the Marvel Comics character. The popularity of the Super Bowl ads also caused a spike in search activity for MySpace (#9), which jumps back into the top 10, up from number 13 last week.

Notes of Interest:

The unexpected death of actor Heath Ledger (#11) sent web users scouring the internet in search of news surrounding Ledger's sudden passing, landing the actor on The Lycos 50, generating more searches this week than MySpace (#13), Pamela Anderson (#15) and the NFL (#16).  Search activity for Ledger has skyrocketed 7,400 percent, also causing an increase in search interest for his former girlfriend, actress Michelle Williams, who jumps 2,400 percent in online activity.  Interest in Ledger's upcoming film, "The Dark Knight," also moves up the search meter, gaining 1,700 percent, and actress Mary Kate Olsen sees her search activity climb 71 percent following initial reports that Ledger was found dead in her New York apartment. Those reports were later corrected after it was learned the apartment did in fact belong to Ledger.   Meanwhile, the unveiling of the MacBook Air has caused a surge in search activity for Apple (#10), which jumps from the number 17 spot on last week's list into this week's top 10.

Search Gainers:

Former President Bill Clinton sees more search interest this week than his wife, presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton.  Search activity for Mr. Clinton is up 1,400 percent, due in part to the media frenzy surrounding him on his wife's campaign trail.  And with the Super Bowl right around the corner, the New England Patriots are scoring extra points with web users, up 183 percent.  Patriots' search interest continues to be driven this week by the media circus covering quarterback Tom Brady, as rumors concerning the condition of Brady's ankle dominate news reports on the practice field in Arizona.  If the Patriots win Super Bowl XLII, they will be the first team in NFL history to end the season with a perfect 19 and 0 record.

Notes of Interest:

On the heals of the Academy Award® nominations announced this week, "Cloverfield" (#28) may not ever receive an Oscar® nod, but it is a big winner with web users, making its first-ever appearance on this week's Lycos 50, as the most-searched film, with search activity quadrupling over the past two weeks.  The story, told from the point of view of one character's video camera in a "Blair Witch" shooting style, broke box office records for January and Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekends, taking in nearly $50 million over four days.  Actor Johnny Depp (#33), fresh off of his recent Oscar® nomination for best-actor in "Sweeney Todd," re-enters this week's list, jumping 643 percent in search popularity.  Depp also received his first Golden Globe win, again in the best-actor category for "Sweeney Todd."

Search Gainers:

The recent premiere of "American Idol" propels searches related to the series to the top of this week's Movers & Shakers list, up 145 percent in search popularity.  Meanwhile, "Idol" judge Paula Abdul leads the pack, jumping 891% in search activity due in part to her just released single called "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow," included on Randy Jackson's upcoming album, "Randy Jackson's Music Club Vol. 1." This is Abdul's first single since "Crazy Cool" was released in 1995.  And from the world of sports, the Super Bowl climbs 59 percent in searches, with web users eagerly anticipating Super Bowl XLII, featuring the New York Giants and the New England Patriots on February 3 in Phoenix, AZ.  New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady is also heating up the search logs, after video footage surfaced showing Brady wearing a walking cast on his right foot as he emerged from the New York apartment of girlfriend Gisele Bundchen.

Search Gainers:

Search interest in actor Tom Cruise jumps 333 percent this week following news that an unauthorized biography by Andrew Morton, who previously profiled Madonna, Princess Diana, and Monica Lewinsky, was released on January 15.  In the book, Morton claims Cruise is the number two leader in the Church of Scientology and even discusses the notion that Suri Cruise may have been conceived using the frozen sperm of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.  Tom Cruise's camp denies Morton's claim, stating Morton did not even try to speak to anyone close to Cruise.  The New York Daily News also reports Cruise is considering a $100 million lawsuit over the publication of the book.  Meanwhile, search activity in Board Games rises 400 percent, due in part to the recent winter weather resulting in millions of web users in search of ways to pass the time indoors.

Notes of Interest:

Rep. Ron Paul continues to dominate web search activity among both the GOP and the Democratic candidates in the 2008 race for the White House, generating 150 percent more online interest than the second most-searched presidential hopeful, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.  However, among the GOP candidates hoping to win their party's nomination, Huckabee sees the largest boost in search activity, generating three times more search interest over the past six months.  Currently, Huckabee receives 67 percent more search interest than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and is six times more popular than Sen. John McCain, based on web search activity.  Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Clinton may be slipping in the polls, but she continues to enjoy a 63 percent lead over Sen. Barack Obama in online interest.

Lycos last reported on the web search activity each candidate was generating in June, 2007.  Since that time, Rep. Paul has generated four times more search interest over the past six months, with Sen. Clinton jumping 52 percent in search popularity.  Of the Democratic presidential hopefuls, front-runner Sen. Barack Obama sees the biggest bump in online interest since June, up 167 percent, while Sen. John Edwards remains unchanged in the search polls.  On the Republican side, Sen. Fred Thompson continues to see a decrease in search activity, down 67 percent since June, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani comes in a very distant last place with web users, failing to register any momentum on the search radar.

WALTHAM, Mass.- December 10, 2007 - Lycos Inc. (www.lycos.com), a leading provider of social publishing, media and search services, today announced its 8th annual list of top 50 search terms for the year 2007, based on The Lycos 50TM, a weekly list of the most popular people, places and things Lycos users search for every day. The Lycos 50 Top Search Terms of 2007 list is based on Lycos user searches from Jan. 1, 2007 through Dec. 1, 2007. For a complete list of The Lycos 50 Top Search Terms of 2007 and for in-depth text of The Lycos 50 Daily Report, go to 50.lycos.com . Readers of The Lycos 50 can also share their thoughts on this year's list on The Lycos 50 Blog located at The Lycos 50 Blog.

The Lycos 50 Top 10 Search Terms for 2007 are:

1) Poker                        6) YouTube

2) MySpace                  7) Naruto

3) Britney Spears         8) Disney

4) Paris Hilton              9) Pokemon

5) Golf                        10) WWE

For the second year in a row, Poker draws the top spot, generating more search activity with Lycos users in 2007 than any other search term. Propelled by the continued success of the World Poker Tour and numerous televised celebrity poker tournaments, online interest in Poker dominates Lycos's search logs week after week. Even the headline-grabbing tabloid antics of Britney Spears were unable to topple Poker from the number one spot on this year's list. Britney does however reign supreme among the most-searched women of 2007, generating more searches than Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Anna Nicole Smith. Two newcomers to the Lycos 50 Top Search List of 2007 are Disney's "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens and "American Idol" contestant, Antonella Barba. While each gained a good deal of attention from their television face time in 2007, it was the individual nude photo scandals that drove search interest in the young starlets over the top. Despite the Hudgens' debacle, the "High School Musical" juggernaut, combined with "Hannah Montana" mania helped to propel Disney to achieve all-star search status in 2007, making The Lycos 50 Year-End list for the first time ever.

Hugely popular web sites had big showings this year, including the premiere destination to view all things video, YouTube, which jumps into the top 10 on the Lycos 50 Top Search Terms of 2007, quadrupling in search popularity over the past year. Facebook also makes its debut at number 27 on the Lycos 50 list of Top Search terms of 2007, jumping 200 percent in search popularity compared to this time last year. But it was MySpace that consistently delivered high volumes of search activity weekly, generating 55 percent more search interest than YouTube, making it the second most popular search term overall in 2007, behind Poker. Meanwhile, gossip blog TMZ.com bumped Perez Hilton from the top spot, generating more searches than all other blog sites with Lycos users in 2007.

In the television world, "Dancing with the Stars" waltzed into the hearts of TV viewers and web users alike in 2007, knocking "American Idol" to the number two most-searched television show this year. Behind the scenes drama involving several of the dancing stars, including Marie Osmond fainting on live television, helped to drive online interest in the ABC hit show. This year's top TV list also sees the debut of several new shows including "Hannah Montana," Gossip Girl," "Heroes" and "Entourage," while popular animated series like "South Park," Family Guy," and "The Simpsons" fail to make the 2007 list of top TV shows. This also marks the first time since 2000 that "The Simpsons" and "South Park" do not appear on the Lycos 50 year-end list of top TV shows.

From the small screen to the big screen, "Transformers" is the top film of 2007 with Lycos users, followed by a list of movie sequels including "Pirates of the Caribbean 3," "High School Musical 2," "Spider-Man 3" and "Ocean's 13." And while the male stars of the big screen generate mega headlines offline, Clay Aiken continues to be the leading man online with web users, taking the top spot as the most-searched man of 2007 for the second year in a row. Rappers dominate the list of top men in 2007, including Tupac Shakur and 50 Cent who reemerge on this year's list after fading in 2006. However, notably absent from the list of most-searched men in 2007 is Howard Stern. While Stern consistently ranks number one as the most popular talk radio personality with web users year after year, this marks the first time Stern has failed to generate enough online interest to make the year-end list of top search terms.

The biggest news story of 2007, based on web search activity, was the Execution of Saddam Hussein. While many traditional news organizations refused to air footage of the actual hanging death of the former Iraqi President, video of the execution ultimately surfaced online, sending web users scouring the Internet in search of Hussein's hanging. Web users also appeared far more interested in the debut of Apple's iPhone and the Michael Vick Dog-Fighting Scandal in 2007, than the War in Iraq, which failed to make the list of top news events for the third consecutive year.

The Ones to Watch in 2008:

The following terms had strong showings in 2007, and based on growing search queries, The Lycos 50 predicts these are the ones to watch in 2008. From the political stage, the terms 2008 Presidential Election, along with presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Ron Paul, and the environmentally conscious term, Going Green are expected to rise significantly in the coming months. The 2008 movies already generating buzz online are highly-anticipated films based on popular TV series and sequels including Batman: the Dark Knight, Sex and the City movie, X-Files movie, Cloverfield, Indiana Jones 4, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Also look for TV and film actors Seth Rogan, Michael Cera, Jenna Fischer, Miley Cyrus, and Christian Bale to put up big search numbers in the coming year. Television shows predicted to score hits online in 2008 include "LOST," "American Idol,""Survivor"and "30 Rock," while from the music scene, OneRepublic will rock web users. In the video game space, expect to see titles like Guitar Hero 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Spore, Mario Kart, Halo Wars, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl lead the way in record sales. Elsewhere in digital products, look for Pleo (robotic dinosaur toy), Digital TVs, and the iPhone/iTouch to increase in popularity in 2008. And from the Internet space, Facebook will continue to heat up along with the explosive growth of online video content, particularly YouTube political/parody ads.
