Search Gainers:

Search activity for Paris Hilton (#1) is up 733 percent this week, driven in part by the Paris Hilton Ad, hitting back at presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain. In the ad, socialite Hilton calls republican candidate McCain a "wrinkly white-haired guy" and offers her own "hot" energy policy plan. Hilton’s presidential parody ad was launched last week in response to Sen. McCain’s TV ad, which undermines democratic presidential rival Sen. Barack Obama by likening Obama’s popularity to celebrities Hilton and Britney Spears. In other political news, online interest in John Edwards jumps 680 percent after Edwards admitted to having an affair with a former campaign aid. After months of speculation, the former U.S. senator and democratic presidential candidate admitted to Bob Woodruff on ABC’s "Nightline" he did in fact have an affair with one of his former campaign aids, Rielle Hunter. Meanwhile, the 2008 Summer Olympics are breaking TV viewing records and bringing home the gold with web users, as search interest increases five-fold. Other summer TV series scoring big hits online include "So You Think You Can Dance," up 475 percent, and "Last Comic Standing," rising 305 percent after the show crowned its first female winner, 25-year-old Los Angeles-based comic, Iliza Shlesinger.

Search Gainers:

Paris Hilton (#1)
remains in the number one spot atop this week’s Lycos 50, due in part to the buzz around presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s most recent TV ad, comparing presidential rival Sen. Barack Obama to celebrities Hilton and Britney Spears (#10). This week, Hilton gets even with McCain releasing a web video of her own, saying her inclusion in McCain’s ad must mean she’s running for President. And Angelina Jolie (#6) jumps back into the top 10 this week after People magazine published the first photos of her newborn twins for a reported $14 million. The issue showcases the 3-week-old twins, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline, and features an interview and additional photos of the Jolie-Pitt clan. Meanwhile, search activity increases 610 percent for Carnegie Mellon University Prof. Randy Pausch, who lost his very dramatic battle to cancer on Aug. 1. Pausch became an inspiration to millions following a farewell speech he delivered at CMU titled "The Last Lecture," resulting in a best-selling book of the same name. The video of Pausch’s speech has been viewed on YouTube more than five million times, and The Last Lecture has been translated into 30 languages, with nearly 3 million copies of the book currently in print. Also jumping in search popularity this week is "Weeds" actress Mary Louise Parker, up 265 percent as her hit show celebrates its fourth season on Showtime. The "Weeds" premier attracted more than 1.75 million households, making it the network’s most-watched season premiere since "The L Word" in 2004.

"The Dark Knight" (#2) enters The Lycos 50 this week, becoming the highest-ranking film to make the Lycos top search list since "The Matrix Reloaded" hit number one on The Lycos 50 in May 2003.  "The Dark Knight" is the fourth most-searched film in the history of The Lycos 50 behind "Star Wars: Episode II," "Spider-Man," and the "Matrix Reloaded."  For a look back at the biggest movies in Lycos 50 history, visit http://50.lycos.com/052103.asp.  Actor Christian Bale (#40) also makes his first-ever appearance on this week's list, due in part to his starring role in "The Dark Knight" as well as news surrounding allegations Bale assaulted his mother and sister at a London hotel on June 20.  In other rough and tumble news, female brawls dominate the Movers and Shakers list this week.  Race car driver Danica Patrick gains 544 percent following an argument with another female racer at the Honda-Indy 200 in Lexington, Ohio. Meanwhile, Wendy Williams jumps 470 percent after an on-air altercation with TV reality star Omarosa. Omarosa, who jumped into the national spotlight during the first season of NBC's The Apprentice, recently appeared with Williams to promote her upcoming book, The Bitch Switch, but instead spent more time trading insults with the radio personality-turned-talk show host.  And search activity for the WNBA increases four-fold after a scuffle on the court between the Detroit Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks.  During the July 22 game at the Palace of Auburn Hills, a fight broke out with 4.6 seconds left in the game.  After the dust cleared, Detroit's Plenette Pierson and assistant coach Rick Mahorn were ejected, along with Los Angeles players Candace Parker and DeLisha Milton-Jones.
